Resilience CRA: Vulnerability and resilience management for socio-environmental systems in exposed territories

Belmont Forum’s Resilience Collaborative Research Action (CRA) is a call for proposals focused on transdisciplinary research about vulnerability and resilience management for socio-environmental systems in exposed territories. The call aims to foster risk science developments aligned with sustainability science, knowledge co-production, and informed governance, particularly in highly vulnerable areas. It will accept proposals that address at least two of the following areas:

Towards the Ocean We Want: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Sustainability for Nature and Human Well-being

Ocean 2 – Towards the Ocean We Want: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Sustainability for Nature and Human Well-being

The Belmont Forum’s OCEAN 2 CRA supports transdisciplinary research addressing global ocean challenges and contributes to the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Projects are expected to last 36 months and involve research consortia with participants from multiple countries and disciplines, including societal partners.

Tropical Forests Call

The Belmont Forum is pleased to announce the launch of a Collaborative Research Action “Tropical Forests: Global Implications and Pressing Actions” (FORESTS 2024) in partnership with the G20.
The CRA FORESTS 2024 aims to coordinate actions and projects with a transdisciplinary approach to develop innovative solutions to the challenges faced in tropical forest regions, Amazonia being the largest and most populated. Acknowledging the differences in governance, cultural diversity, and territorial configuration, this CRA spans tropical forests worldwide that face similar challenges.
This call for proposals recognises the growing threats to those ecosystems and their inhabitants, such as climate change, deforestation, unregulated agroindustry and land conversion, illegal activities, pollution, and environmental/climate injustices. In the global tropical forest regions such as the Amazon, Central America, Asia, and Africa, the well-being and survival of indigenous peoples and local communities depend on the local ecosystem under pressure.
The challenges tropical forest regions face vary depending on governance, local ecology, cultural diversity, and territorial configuration.

Africa Regional Call (ARC)

In support of the African Union’s climate, environment, and sustainability goals and priority areas for Agenda 2063, the National Research Foundation, South Africa (NRF) has led the development of this Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action (CRA) to address knowledge gaps and priorities in addressing climate change vulnerability across the continent.

Three themes (or areas) of concern emerged from scoping sessions with the community:

  • Area 1: Water – Energy – Food – Health Nexus
  • Area 2: Pollution
  • Area 3: Disaster Preparedness, Responsiveness, and Recovery

In addition to the three call Areas, green and blue economy was identified as a cross-cutting issue and education and awareness were identified as cross-cutting activities to be encouraged.

This call was launched in 2024. The deadline to receive proposals ended in early 2025 and the project proposals are under review.

CEH2

Climate, Environment, and Health 2 (CEH 2)

This Collaborative Research Action focused on the nexus of Climate, Environment, and Health to address an unmet need to promote, mobilize, and establish an inclusive, transdisciplinary funding scheme, through the preservation and celebration of diverse communities, research topics, ecosystems, and creative transformative solutions.
One ambitious goal for this CRA was to hopefully create a comprehensive culture shift through education, research, service, and advocacy to inspire a world where all animals and humans can thrive — through the integration of human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental science — and by adapting and protecting Earth’s natural systems for generations to come.
Applicants were invited to submit research proposals that address at least one of the three call themes:
  • Decision-science of environmental behavior and implementation.
  • Food, Environment, and Biological Security.
  • Climate Risks to Ecosystems & Populations.
This CRA was launched in 2022 and 11 projects are preparing for kickoff.
Pathways

Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability (Pathways)

This Collaborative Research Action (CRA) aimed to provide a science base for achieving sustainability goals and was intended to support 1-2 years of collaborative research networking activities that focus on integrated qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop Earth-system-based transformation pathways for sustainable development.   This call was launched in 2020 and the selected projects are ongoing.
